With summer approaching, travel plans increase and vacation scams do too. You can avoid getting caught up in a scam by learning some of the tell-tale signs of a fraudster.

1) Beware of free or cheap vacations.

You’re offered a fantastic vacation package at a surprisingly low price—or even a free vacation. The catch: You must reserve your spot right away.

Take a moment to consider:

Offer: A legitimate company won’t ask you to pay for a free vacation or pressure you.

Caution: High-pressure sales pitches may indicate a scam. Take your time to make your decision.

Research: Verify the legitimacy of the company and offer before commitment.

Scam Signs: Be cautious of fees, taxes, and robocall offers.

2) Research trusted sources and company reviews.

  • Book directly from reputable sources.
    • Get recommendations from trusted sources.
    • Read trusted company reviews.
  • Exercise caution with travel agents and shopping sites.
    • Verify travel agent referrals.
    • Be wary of hidden fees on travel sites.
  • Confirm reservations directly with providers.
    • Call or visit official websites.
    • Verify reservations with airlines or hotels.

3) Know how to spot vacation rental scams.

If it looks too good to be true, it usually is.

  • To help protect yourself from vacation rental scams, only shop on reputable travel sites.
  • Beware that below-market rent can be a sign of a scam.
  • Check that the address of the property truly exists.
  • If the property is within a resort, call the front desk and confirm location and other details in your contract.
  • Walk away from any listings that require you to pay with wire transfers or cryptocurrency. Those sources are harder to trace, which makes them favored payment methods for scammers.

4) Book your vacation using a payment method with fraud protection.

  • If you can, use a credit card for flights and rental property payments to ensure tracking and fraud protection.
  • Avoid cash, wired funds, cryptocurrency, or gift cards due to scam risks.
  • Confirm vacation contract terms and refund/ cancellation policies before payment.

So, the next time you’re vacation planning, simply remember to do your research, stay informed and play it safe. Bon voyage!

Always remember

  • If it’s too good to be true, it probably is.
  • Watch out for irreversible payment requests like wire or crypto.
  • Search for a company’s website on your own, not using the address they gave you.
  • Don’t be rushed to act or give up personal information.
